5 Home improvements to Make Right After Moving In

Man Changing a Door Lock

Moving is stressful, but there are some things you can do at your new home to help you get a better night's sleep the first night in your new home with peace of mind. Below are 5 home improvements we recommend making as soon as you get to your new home.

Change the Locks

The very first thing you should do upon arriving at your new home is to change the locks. Most locks are relatively easy to install. You can also contact a locksmith – we recommend scheduling this ahead of time if you are choosing this option.

Change Alarm Batteries

Another improvement that will help with peace of mind the first night is changing all of the alarm batteries. Once the batteries have been switched out you will also want to test the alarms to ensure they are working properly. You should also ensure you have enough alarms throughout the house to ensure you are well covered. According to the National Fire Protection Association the “National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, has required as a minimum that smoke alarms be installed inside every sleep room (even for existing homes) in addition to requiring them outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home”.

Deep Clean

While your new home may have been cleaned prior to you moving in, there’s something to be said for doing a deep clean yourself. While deep cleaning the entire home is ideal, the 3 most important things to deep clean before settling in are your carpets, bathrooms, and your kitchen.

Childproof your Home

Keep your family safe by childproofing your home as soon as possible. Moving is a hectic time and while you may not be keeping the most diligent eye on the little ones you will have peace of mind knowing cabinets and doors and stairs are childproofed.

Caulk Gaps & Cracks

Keep bugs out and your heating and cooling more efficient by caulking any gaps and cracks throughout the house. We also suggest fixing any holes in the walls as well while you’re at it. This seemingly small fix will save you in the long run.
