It is normal to need additional layers of approval to make any changes to a historic home. These restrictions can make renovations take longer and cost a lot more. In some cases, you may not even be able to renovate a home the way you would like to depend on the restrictions in place. Consult your local officials to determine how much control community officials have over your renovations. 

Historic homes tend to need more attention and care than newer construction properties. Getting a thorough home inspection is pertinent for any home purchase but is especially important when buying a historic home. Knowing what you are getting into before the home is your responsibility will help you determine if you can financially handle a historic home or if the cons of a property outweigh the pros.
